Where they really differ
Works whether the visitor has email set up
A mailto: link asks the visitor's device to open whatever it has registered to handle mail; webmail only counts if the visitor once agreed to let it. What happens next isn't yours to control — nothing at all, or an app they've never signed into. Either way they're no longer contacting you. A Toimii form submits over the network, with no mail app in the path.
A form doesn't publish your address
Your address sits in the page source, where anything that crawls the page can read it — which is the point of publishing it, and also the problem. A Toimii form publishes no address at all, and scores every submission for spam on the way in; flagged ones are held in the dashboard, not dropped, one click from being restored.
A blank compose window asks for nothing
Whatever the visitor types is what you get: a mailto: link carries no fields. You can't require a phone number, offer a date picker, or ask the one question that tells you whether the job is worth quoting. A Toimii form has required fields, dates, phone numbers and file uploads, and can hide a question until an earlier answer makes it relevant.
A record, not just an inbox
With a mailto: link the message is the record. If it lands in spam, or the mailbox changes hands, or someone deletes it, the contact is gone and you never knew it existed. Isn't clicking a link easier for the visitor than filling in a form?
Clicking is easier; sending isn't. The link takes the visitor out of your site into another app — if one opens — and hands them an empty message to write. A form keeps them where they are and tells them what you need. And when a mailto: click goes nowhere, neither of you finds out.
Do I need a developer or a plugin to switch?
